Ron Arad’s one-of-a-kind creative approach each time creates a challenge in the way materials are used in the production stages and design. His new Do-Lo-Rez combines or shall we say perfectly blends the worlds of the hi-tech, arts and design. It’s a quite stylish sofa made out of few comfortable, square-based rectangular- or cube-shaped elements of different heights. The elements are organized in rows in order to create the shape of the ‘traditional’ sofa, and fixed to a platform using steel pins. The elements all have approximately 8.26 by 8.26 inches footprint while varying in height from 10.82 to 32.67 inches. They’re manufactured of different-density polyurethane foam. Softer foam used at the top guarantees best comfort and stiffer foam is used at the bottom of each element to grip the steel pin. These components can be easily rearranged to form a variety of compositions and shapes. This surprisingly complex designer sofa is not simple at all in production, construction and structure terms. The designer proposes a modern look at design to bring the imaginary world into the real world.
